View on L’Oréal: The "insetting" approach for a carbon balance

The L'Oréal group, accompanied by Transitions, has chosen to develop a new innovative "carbon insetting" approach.

The L'Oréal group, accompanied by Transitions and more particularly by Thibault Gravier, associate director, has chosen, as part of its Sharing Beauty With All strategy, to develop a new innovative "carbon insetting" approach (developing its own project and benefiting from the carbon credits generated within its own value chain), in contrast to “carbon offsetting” (buying “carbon credits” from a certified project that sells the equivalent of its carbon reduction volume in “credit” equivalent).

In 2015, the Group announced its ambition to become “carbon balanced” through this innovative strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions linked to the production of raw materials used in its products (scope 3).
To this end, three actions are implemented:
– Improving agricultural practices: innovative solutions for low-carbon agriculture, agroforestry or sustainable land management, while improving the living conditions of small-scale producers,
– Improving energy efficiency: easier access to more sustainable energy projects for the first stages of change,
– Protection and conservation of forests: projects to combat deforestation, limit the expansion of agricultural land or enhance the sustainable use of forest products.

It should be noted that carbon neutrality for a company or organization consists in minimizing emissions emitted by direct operations linked to the activity of a company or organization (scope 1 and 2) but not on scope 3.
